You and me both! Gale and I don't have much say in the matter of photos.
Color images will require a separate grant (something we're targeting for
a special issue a few years down the line). As for b/w images, we have a
limit on the number of halftones per volume. (In fact, for a couple of the
images in my own article, I had actually gotten permission from the
holding library to use photos and had purchased the transparencies, but we
were over our volume allotment, so I had to do redrawings instead anyway.)

We do try to make sure there are footnotes pointing people to better views
of images where possible (in other books or online).

What surprised me most on Vol. 1 was that the designer made some of the
images so small, particularly as we had specified that some of them needed
to be larger to show necessary detail. I have had a specific request
approved for some larger images in Volume 2 (which is already in the
publisher's hands -- we're assembling Vol. 3 now). So, with luck we will
get a bit more bang per halftone buck. Cross your fingers.
