Um,

nope, not quite, Bjarne, there's lots of embellishment in the form of embroidery, tablet weaving or the use of fancy fabric as trims (i.e. chinese silk). The site of the link mentioned above (Thora Sharptooth) has more info on tablet woven decoration as well, not just embroidery. The main problem is to determine where it was placed, since not all remains have been found in situ or even in connection with a garment/fabric. Most in depth info can be found in different journals (Textile History, Costume, various Scandinavian publications), Carolyn's website has a very good bibliography for it as well. A fine source is Margarete Hald's book "Ancient Danish Textiles from Bogs and Burials" with quite a bit of info on the Mammen find (also: M. Iversen, "Mammen, grav kunst og samfund i vikingetid" but that's hard to find) and others.

Another site with some good info about a specific find (Oseberg) can be found here: http://www.forest.gen.nz/Medieval/articles/Oseberg/textiles/TEXTILE.HTM (scroll down to embroideries).

Hope this helps,

Caithlinn

Hi,
No embellishment, just clothing for warmth

Bjarne
