Wow, I always thought I was breaking records by reading _War and Peace_
and _Remembrance of Things Past_. Still can't say I'm up for over 1,500
pages of passive whining, though. Life's too short to read the thing,
entire or abridged, just to figure out a couple minor mysteries in the
film. The first two are great books.
BTW, if anyone is up for excellent Regency-inspired modern fantasies, try:
_Jonathan Norrell & Mr. Strange_ (Susanna Clarke; in the style of Jane
Austen)
and
_Lord Byron's Novel: The Evening Land_ (John Crowley; in the style of a
Byron being Gothick)

Encouraging--did she read the full or the abridged (a mere 700 pages)
edition?
