Quilts were made of clothes fabric. Printed cotton
quilts were made of printed cotton clothes fabric.
It might have been purposely bought for the quilt
project (yes, that did happen), or might have been
scraps left over from a clothing project.
Or "recycled" scraps from clothes no longer in any shape to be worn. The
contemporary term for recycling is "waste not, want not".
