Oh, yes! It was around 1967. And, of course, I was warned to stay away from them. :-)

I saw dozens of Hippies in person before I ever saw one in a hoop skirt.

Maybe because they were out of style by 1906? :-) It's interesting how an era is frozen into/associated with the identity of certain places. There's a good question, other than hoops in the south, what other places are associated with historic dress? Hmmm, Philadelphia 1776 comes to mind. Plymouth and 17thC puritan dress.
