We are probably too close to the end of the 20th century to identify a fashion style or item -- we can look at the early and middle years of the century but need some space before we can objectively look at what really worked as opposed to what designers and others put forward as definitive of the final decade or so.
I think it may just be fabrics/fabric technology/colouring that will define the time combined with production techniques.
