I bought the elliptical hoop pattern because it's smaller than the round hoop pattern, 9764 (which is still available) and although round hoops were more common in the 50s the oval skirt does show up periodically (in fact I think the original wedding dress in PoF1 may have been worn over an oval hoop as the back of the skirt is longer than the front).
