I've brought these together into a single response.

Marc, you are affiliated with a University right? So I wouldn't be
giving anything away by sharing this source I found?
Well it's academia, so you could call it work if you wanted to :) I can't
imagine that it would be giving anything away though. Besides the licensing
security won't let it get past through -that- link. However, with the
title and author we can pull up the item. Let me see if there are any other
copies since this one is only held by two libraries on the planet.
*Die textilen Byssus-Reliquien des Christlichen Abendlandes, aufbewahrt
in den Kirchen zu Köln, Aachen, Cornelimünster, Mainz and Prag.*
*Author: *Bock, Franz, 1823-1899.
*Publication: *Aachen, 1895
OCLC: 27455177
Now granted it is written in a "suspect" time, but it migh have some
clues. You have my curiosity peaked now. BTW, I checked the electronic
Middle English Compendium and neither Byssus nor Bissus are there.
And they should be. The OED has as one of its citations: 1398 TREVISA Barth
De P.R. XVII. xcvii. (1495) 664 Therbe many manere flexe . but the fayrest
of al growyth in Egypte: for therof is Bissus made ryght fayre and whyte as
snowe. [Trevisa in this case is Trevisa, John de Bartholomeus (de
Glanvilla) De proprietatibus rerum tr. 1398 (Tollemache MS.; Add. MS. (B.M.)
27944; MS. e Museo (Bodl.) 16; W. de Worde 1495; 1535)}

I've printed it off and will be reading it shortly.

Well, if it is true, there they are!
The drawbacks to deep-linking :)
(If anyone else is following this, Go to the British Museum base page and
search collections for gloves. )

Do you have a more complete citation? My university isn't subscribed
through this link.
