Saw the first episode of this dramatisation (which we were
discussing earlier) last night, and enjoyed it very much. I'm not a
Victorian expert, but the costumes seemed fine to me, except that I
don't know why Esther was travelling without a bonnet on in the
early scenes, when she was seen wearing one later.
See http://www.bbc.co.uk/drama/bleakhouse/
My guess is that the bonnet and the hood of her cloak were made
independently, and when it came to do the filming, they couldn't get
the hood to fit over the bonnet! (Probably wouldn't work for the bit
where she takes the hood off too.) Otherwise rather an impressive
debut I feel. And Charles Dance makes a great Victorian. So many
wonderful faces, almost cartoonish, but made it much easier to
remember who was who. Looking forward to the next few weeks - two
weekly half hour episodes - lovely.
