Dear Diana,
Silk taffetas comes in 2 main types. One is heavy weaved, very stiff and stout, and another is much lighter. So it depends what you want to use it for. I would say that the thinner quality, is useable, for bodices jackets and the likes, if you interline it with a stiffer fabric. The heavy sort is my ideal for costumes. Skirts drapes very beautifull with this. Prices varies a lot here in Denmark. I can easy pay up to 1000,00 kr. wich is about 160 dollars a meter. This is a very fine silk shop, and you pay extra because they have a huge amount of colours and different kinds of silk fabrics to choose from Another cheap fabric shop sometimes have taffeta, but it is a lesser fine quality, but the same weight and stiffnes for about 25 dollars. Mostly they only carries the colours you choose for bridal wear, different whites. This sort has some weave faults, but only little. Finally i found another shop wich sells this fine quality for 350,00 kr. wich is about 58 dollars, but they only have a little colour range.
Happy sewing to you two!

Subject: [h-cost] OT-Question about Silk Taffeta

Hello everyone,

I was hoping that any of you who use silk taffeta in your costuming could
help me......

I have been told that dupioni is not really appropriate for historical
costuming but I know that many of us use it to cut down on costs. Taffeta
is closer to the weave/weight/sheen that is appropriate for the 1500's
through the 1800's but it is more expensive.

I have a supplier that has a nice range of colored taffetas but I am not
sure if the price is reasonable or not.

If you use silk taffeta, what do you typically pay per yard for it? What
colors would you like to be able to find? Any other input? (Please
respond to me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] so that we don't clog up the list)

Thanks for your help! And if I can offer silk taffetas at good prices, I
will do so.

Happy Sewing,

Diana
