Lord....After making a real kilt out of wool, I'd never do a leather one  
that full. I mean, there's no tartan to match up so you can make the pleats as  
shallow as the look will allow. That's why I thought just a little more  than 
full return. So if the hips are say 40" and you had like 20  1" pleats in the 
back with maybe 2" added to each return, that would  be  20 X 3 + (20 x 2) = 
100" or  a little over 2 and 3/4 yards in the  back [it does add up, doesn't 
it]. So the whole thing might be about a 4 yard or  less kilt.....like a 
utility 
kilt.
 
On "Last of the Mohicans" Daniel Day Lewis's shirt was cut just like any  
18th century shirt out of a soft leather the weight of washed cotton. That 
might  
be a good weight to use....or a little heavier...just a little.
 
We also made an 1740s coat out of elk hide for a trapper in the film. Boy  
was it beautiful! and heavy. But the weight made those back pleats swing  
gracefully. It was something I would have nicked at rap if I  could've!
