Yes, I'm looking forward to authentic 18th century patterns from
Simplicity, hopefully next year. Not only should reinactors welcome
them, but Sophia Coppola's film based on Antonia Fraser's biog of Marie
Antoinette is coming out sometime later next year, which should spark an
interest in late 18th costume.

Lovers of Japanese costume should at least have a look at the Newmarket
book, "Memoirs of a Geisha: Images of the Film" Of course, as in all
Hollywood films, the extras have more authentic costumes, makeup and
hairstyles, than the leads, but there is explanation why the lead
actresses often are costumed less accurately than extras. For this film,
it was not only because the leads have to stand out, the film and book
relates Sayuri's memoiries, especially as a child, of the glamorous
geisha Matsumomo. The Tonner Doll Company is doing a doll, a 16" tall
Spring Dance Sayuri(a likeness of the movie character, not the actress
playing Sayuri)in a stunning costume, copying the original from the
movie. No release date yet for this doll, which is the first based on
the movie. The full Memoirs of a Geisha doll line by Tonner will
premier in Jan 2006, along with the full Harry Potter doll line,
including Ron and Hermione and extra costumes and accessories. The 17"
tall Harry Potter doll in Hogwarts uniform is supposed to ship next
month; FAO Schwarzt will have an exclusive version of this HP doll with
Hedwig the owl retailing for $150.
