Mine in Omaha did the same-the little blurbs. Of course neither will be
here well before Christmas. If you want a good preview of MOAG, try
getting a look at Memoirs of a Geisha: Images from the Film. I got a
used copy for $20 + ship and it is lovely eye candy. Using Chinese
actresses for the female leads is the usual Hollywood thing--using
"name" actors to get financing and pull in more viewers. Ziyi Zhang,
Gong Li, and Michelle Yeoh are at least known names to financers and
American audiences that are fans of movies like Croaching Tiger, Hidden
Dragon, Hero, and Raise the Red Lantern. The actresses that play young
Chiyo and Pumpkin are Japanese. If you want strict accuracy on costume,
makeup, and hairstyles, as always with movies set in previous times,
check out the extras.

And of course, in "The New World" Pocahontas can't go about accurately
dressed and has to be at least teen-aged. It does look like the
Powhatans will be treated with some accuracy and respect, while John
Smith and Company will be seen as invaders. Nice change. For an
excellent biography of Pocahontas and her people, check out "Pocahontas
and the Powhatan Dilemma" by Camilla Townsend.
