Okay, here's a tip for anyone in Melbourne, Australia, before January 9:

ACMI (Australian Centre for Moving Image) is staging a Stanley Kubrick
retrospective including props, costumes, scripts, notes, sketches and clips
ranging from
making-ofs to movie scenes.

Included in the display are:

Olivier's white armour from Spartacus (they had sewing machines in ancient
Rome?);

Senator's costume from Spartacus (with some interesting moth-hole patching);

A selection of frock coats and gowns from Barry Lyndon (including a redcoat
uniform had some interesting "repair" distressing here and there);

Hooded Cape and masks from Eyes Wide Shut;

Full ape, an ape mask, silver spacesuit and pack, and red space helmet from
2001;

"Born to Kill" army helmet; and

Plenty of others from the movies.

There are lots of props, costume accessories, original costume sketches,
reproductions of several costumes including Clockwork Orange pieces, set models
(the miniature of the centrifuge still works!), and a great look at the
obsessive research the director undertook (5 foot tall stack of books on
Napoleon for an unrealised project, for instance, along with dozens of
Empire/Regency sketches).

The nice thing about the displays is most are on podiums, not behind glass so
you can get your nose right up to them so long as you do not touch.

The display is in conjuction with a couple of collections including Kubrick's
estate so there are some hard-to-see inclusions.

I know, I know, you'd prefer a considered review but hell, it's Monday morning
and I am too busy avoiding clients to be in one place for too long. Maybe one
day - - -
