I know this is a huge job, but you might consider taking pieces and making  
some kind of quilt for yourself, to preserve the memories.  Putting the  fabric 
out to air might help the smell.  And sometimes, individually ugly  fabrics 
make up quite nicely in quilts.
 
Some of what you have might not be useful to anybody--I'm thinking if there  
are polyester knits from the '60s for example--except as samples.  But if  
there are cotton prints, I imagine a quilters' group would like them.
 
I've been going through my stash recently and weeding out all kinds of  
things--I used to work at two fabric stores.  Mostly I take it to our local  
thrift 
store, where they do bag up fabric pieces to sell. A very few pieces I  can 
offer to individuals.  I gave pieces of cotton prints to a quilter for  
Christmas last year.
