All I have is your basic model. I'm a historical costumer by trade, working for museums, and this is all I ever needed for women's clothes. You can't really get one that adjusts to many different styles needed for the different time periods. Corsets mounted on a dress dolly can shrink the padding underneath, which makes getting an accurate fit difficult. I still rely on fitting on the person.

I use the dolly to support garments while I hem them, hanging bias garments out, checking sleeve alignment, that sort of thing. I sometimes mount projects on the dolly to take photos and see how things are looking.

I would like to upgrade to a professional hard tailor's dolly as they tend to be a little more stable and don't tip. I've used the foam ones, but don't really care for them as they tend to go out of shape and stay that way if you corset them, that and they off gas (smell).

I'd get yourself a basic model. Often they can be found second hand for as little as $10. Then get a sloper fitted to you, and use that to pad out your dolly. Use non twill fabric in the sloper as it will streatch, and be prepared to re check the fit from time to time.

Happy dolly buying,

Subject: [h-cost] which dress form? - opinions
Date: Sun, 11 Dec 2005 07:47:21 -0800 (PST)

The question posted earlier got me thinking that I need a dress form too. I know very little about them except that they can be quite useful. Which ones are the easiest to work with and adjust, and are some more compatible with adjustments for certain body types? Specifically - short back/long hip, small rib cage and waist but broad shoulders and largish bust.

I took a quick peek online at Hancocks and they currently have one on sale for $99. This brought up the questions as this basic one doesn't look like it would adjust very well to what is required. The Prym-Dritz twin fit looks like it might be more amenable to the proper measurements.

I'm looking for one that would be appropriate for both costuming and 'modern' clothing.

What all is out there and what have been everyone's experiences? What would be considered a reasonable price?

  Thanks,
  Annette M
