This is what I was going to suggest. In "Fashion in Detail" there is a  
doublet with lozenge shaped buttons and loops....the cord also being used for  
decoration in a frog-like manner.
 
And I seem to remember something about two rows of buttons [one on each  
side] that are used to lace a doublet closes....looping the cord around the  
buttons. But that may be just for women's doublet bodices....though I don't 
know  
why.
 
And of course hooks and eyes are period as has been pointed out. You can  sew 
a button right on the edge of the opening over each hook and eye.
 
I would recommend a placket underneath.....and underlap of the fashion  
fabric to make any small gaps not noticeable.
