This was a literary Christmas for me - I got "Memoirs of a Geisha -
a Portrait of the Film" which has lovely pics - I do a lot of
oriental -inspired costumes so this will give me more ideas...
I also got 3 books (2 wrapped and one still in transit) from my
research list for my Empress Theodora costume I'm doing this
spring. I got a lovely vintage-look tree ornament, and several
modern paperbacks and one hard cover book in my favorite genres,
military science fiction and alternate history. Plus a bookstore
gift card. The only non-literary gift besides the ornament was a new
set of sheets (needed - but it's still 'fabric' <g>).
Reference alternate history - one of those I got was part of a series
by Harry Turtledove - who is an historian by education and when he's
not writing fiction. The series is called "Crosstime Traffic" and
deals with a company which sends observers across dimensions to
places where Earth's history came out differently. This one I got
postulates that the Kaiser's Germany never fell and rules North
America (this from the back cover). The previous ones did give some
interesting insights into how the historical culture might have
evolved (or stagnated), along with details like cooking, commerce,
clothing, etc. Fun reads!
Happy New Year,
Sandy
