I have to say that I've given up trying to "feel" out paintings. There
are more than a few that I've seen that individually "feel" like later
works (and I can't call any to mind at the moment, I'm sure that
they'll come to me -- ah, this one by Paris Bordone
http://realmofvenus.renaissancewoman.net/wardrobe/BordoneHandkerchief.jpg
has a Victorian feel to it, but so do many of his other works) but when
taken as a body of work, it's easy to see that it's probably just a
stylistic thing.
It's still fun, even if I end up wrong. ;)
Oh, but yes!
The one you cited -- the skin tone on the hands vs. the chest & face
is so different, I'm wondering if there's any chance it was redone at
a later time?
You know, it could be. I had originally assumed that she was wearing
gloves, but it doesn't appear to be so. Most of his other women's
overall "shape" is boxier that this lady, but that could just be the
play of the shadow as well. *sigh* I'd like to know where Bella got
that particular image. Most of the Bordones that I have in my
e-collection are B&W, so I don't know if they're still around or if
nobody's done a recent "study" so we can have pretty color pictures.
One of my favorite paintings had some rework done on it at some point
-- St. Elegius and the lovers had a halo put on St. E. but it was
taken off in conservation a few years ago.
Some of the newer conservarion efforts are undoing the changes that had
been done over the years. And you know there is still the occasional
controversy over the restoration of the Sistine Chapel.
