If you are interested in this period, you will want to see the exhibit
Young America: The Daguerreotypes of Southworth & Hawes. I saw it at the
George Eastman House in Rochester, NY over the holiday and the images
are superb. It features over 150 images by the photographers from the
1840s through 1860s. The exhibit includes the original daguerreotypes
and painting of Nancy Southworth featured in Joan Severa's Dressed for
the Photographer. The details you can see in the originals are amazing.
There is a massive catalog for the exhibit, but it runs $120 and the
photos simply cannot convey the details visible in the originals.
The show in Rochester closes this week (Jan. 8) and it will run Jan 28
to April 9 in Andover, MA in its final run.
