a few years ago i took an accessory design class which had a millinery component. when we were learning how to make silk flowers, the teacher brought in a reprint of a victorian (at least i think, but possibly 1920s) millinery trimmings manual that included directions on how to make realistic faux feathers out of silk ribbon.
