Actually, cat fur is very slippery, not barbed. It can be spun, but it takes quite a bit of twist to hold it together; and to make it even close to stable, you need to ply it right away. It's the twist that holds the fibers together, whatever their source (I have spun wool, mohair, silk, cotton, flax, ramie, my own hair, Samoyed dog hair, etc.).
