Hi.

My thanks to Genie Barrett and D (Debloughcostumes)
for answering my post. I apologize for not stating up
front that I have already seen the Osprey manuals.
This is the (scant) bibliography that I have at my
disposal:

Zhongguo du dai jun rong fu shi (Ancient Chinese
Armor)
Liu, Yonghua
Brown Rockefeller UC485.C6 L58x 2004
Military uniforms -- Pictorial works
Armor, Ancient -- China -- Pictorial works

Zhongguo fu zhuang shi
Huang, Nengfu
Brown Rockefeller GT 1555 H79
Costume -- China -- History

Zhongguo li dai fu shi da guan
Brown Rockefeller GT 1555 C584
Costume -- China -- History

The Osprey books-- while helpful to some degree-- are
not in accord with the illustrations in General Qi
Jiguang's Manual.

General Qi was fighting Japanese Pirates off the coast
in 1560-1580 and his soldiers weren't wearing armor,
or if they were, it was more on the order of padded
clothing. There are numerous illustrations from the
manual, and I will try to scan and post them on my web
space, but, for now, this is the only picture I can
show you
http://taijiclassproject.blogspot.com/2005/12/costumes.html

You can't quite see it in this picture, but it looks
like the undergarment is for the protection of the
thighs, and that it is is made of padded material and
has fringe.

If anyone has any other detailed illustrations or
information pertaining to military clothing, I would
very much appreciate hearing about it.

I was also very much appreciate any educated guesses
anyone familiarywith costume would care to make as to
whether that "fringe" is decorative or-- something
else.

Thank you.
