Perhaps it is a personal perception thing, but as a size 8
corset-wearing woman who worked for years corsetting larger opera
singers, I can tell you that in my experience, the larger the woman, the
more a corset can compress without discomfort. You can't cinch me more
than one or two inches smaller than my actual measurements without it
really starting to cramp my style. On ladies of size 18, though, I've
pulled in four inches and been told, "Oh, just keep going--that feels
fine." I have occasionally come across a larger woman who was more
firmly packed, if you will, and whose corset compression was more
similar to mine.
It's not just a comfort thing--you can tell when you're lacing someone
in when the compression should stop. Up to that point, it's about the
corset fitting properly, not shifting around, and providing support.
After that point, it's about the comfort of the wearer and their ability
to do whatever they need to do while wearing it.

I find that when a larger woman wears a corset, there
really isn't a major change in her shape- it's just
smoother. A smaller woman, because she does have less
stuff to squish, will see more dramatic response to
the compression. Add to that a bumroll on a small
woman and the difference becomes even more pronounced,
whereas a larger woman likely won't need one at all;
the corset will have pinched just enough that her hips
will have popped out all by themselves.

I am one of those "larger" women and my tailor has remarked that I am
fairly "squishy" in the torso when being fitted for a corset. Turns out
that I have a fairly small backside and not much in the hips, so I don't
have anything to "pop out" for a bumroll shape. I would guess that the
way you are shaped by a corset is very individual and depends upon your
natural shape (and how the corset is designed and fitted). But we can
all look great in our gowns. Aren't optical illusions wonderful? :-D
