Sorry - meant to reply to this a couple of days ago, and completely forgot (

too much work, too little time).

Somebody mentioned livinghistory.co.uk as a way for finding a group - I'd 
recommend against it - it's a discussion board - participants have quite a 
limited range of interest, and more tha 3/4 are late medievaists (c.15th).

Histrenact lists groups on it's website, and 'call to arms' can be bought by

mail order (lists practically every group in the country along with contacts

and what they do - and a few that aren't in the uk).

had a word with Nige, too, and he suggests the jousting at the royal 
armouries (about two hours from london by train if you get the right train),
and the 
early medieval alliance (I'm not sure what their kit is like as I've never
seen 
it, but they apparently do the chivalric thing).
