Harris tweed is gorgeous stuff (was lucky enough (well boyfriend was anyway) to pick up a couple of rolls of it at Leeds market ages ago for next to nothing - dead stock from a tailoring supplier - smug grin!!!!)
The real stuff can actually be made on a few of the islands surrounding Harris in the Outer Hebrides now (Harris, Lewis, Uist and Barra) - though it originated on Harris itself, of course. It's protected by Act of Parliament to call it Harris tweed if not "of pure virgin wool, spun, dyed and handwoven by islanders in their homes in the Outer Hebrides, (all about protecting the livelihood of the crofters weaving it). Was a fscinating program when on BBC2 when Nike used H tweed on a trainer. Would also suggest accessories, or small stuff - making sleeves out of something else might well just look odd (though it depends on what it actually is) - plus finding something with the same properties might be a task!
