Hi Suzi,
Yes i did know this, also because when you have to catch the thread with the
needle, it has to be a strong thread, you can se the same in Costume in
Detail.
I should have ben more specific, i ment those embroidered with long and
short stitch and satin stitches. Many of these has a stripe in the border of
the front wich is not a tape, but actually embroidered and i have noticed
that this stripe is made with twisted threads, while all the other
embroidery is made of untwisted thread. Some coats and waistcoats also has a
"stripe" embroidered in a sertain pattern and these also are made from
twisted threads. You see the same in buttons, usually many of these is
having a stripe embroidered in the edge, a cirkle wich also has twisted
thread, but the main motif in the middle of the button is made of untwisted
thread.

Hi again,
This is just a question i have for some of the members who makes or study
18th century embroideries.
I have noticed that most of the french habits, are embroidered with 2
kinds
of silk thread. The monofillament silk (reeled untwisted silk) for the
motifs, and then that the stripes wich are made as borders are embroidered
with a twisted silk. This makes sence to me, as the borders will be mostly
worned out, and therefore have to be made with a stronger thread.
Has any of you noticed this?

My waistcoat fragment, from about 1780, is embroidered with what I think
is tambour stitching with a twisted thread, in pink and green mainly. If
you go to my fotopic site http://suziclarke4384.fotopic.net/c382113.html
it forms the background for my fashion plates, and you can see it in some
detail.
