I'd seen a hat not unlike this in a Smithsonian exhibit years ago -- it was brightly colored and black webbing (like an inkle loom band) wound around the head just like this. I vaguely recall it was Peruvian, but I could easily be mistaken.

One of the interesting things about the Magdalen's hat is the motto on it; I don't think I've ever heard what it says, as it's barely legible in only a few reproductions.
