It's tolerated but SCA time frame ends Dec.31 1600, so I'm sure you can
understand why some disaprove of people dressing in clothing past that
ending date.

It really depends on the group you play with. In a kingdom long ago and far away we happily did 1630-ish fashion and nobody blinked. But there were a bunch of people already doing it. My current local group seems to have different interests and focus and I'd probably be out of place in "cavalier" fashion.

If the husband is reluctant, dressing him very differently from the other men in the group may just make him more uncomfortable and not want to play. Something to take into account when you discuss what he likes...
