Nice site.

If you go to the purple dress, the all white and cream garment is the
kirtle.
She seems to have used the kirtle bodice as a corset and boned it. This is
interesting, I wonder if this is learning from extent garments or theory.
I am curious about the petticoat, taffeta bodice and wool skirt. As I am not
an expert, these layers are new to me.
Becky, Note the sleeves of the smock and then compare it to the picture with
the cream false sleeves. The poufs in the false sleeves are not from the
smock sleeves.
The purple laced picture is showing the bodice of the purple gown. A placard
which is a piece of material that is sewn in the shape of the front of the
bodice covers the lacing and is pinned with straight pins along the sides.
The points of the pins are embedded between the layers.
So what she has is:
smock
bodice and wool skirt
petticoat
farthingale
kirtle/corset
gown.
Is this correct?
I have alway thought it was:
smock (maybe underwear)
kirtle
gown
What I find frustrating with the site is that only the children's costumes
show the layers but not the adults.
Beautiful work though.

It came from someone on the h-costume boards. I will see if I still have the
reference.
I don't know what a short sleeved kirtle looks like.
I have the Margo Anderson patterns, the Arnold books and ordered one by Jean
M(? I can't remember the last name right now) It's about costuming.
The site where I have seen the pictures of the layers used for this portrait
is "Ninya Mikhaila" [EMAIL PROTECTED]
http://www.ninyamikhaila.com
Her website has 2 versions of a gown from the portrait. One shows the layers
and the other shows how she did the front opening. She also wrote to me when
I asked questions. She has been very helpful and easily available when I
needed her advice.
