I'm looking for more online galleries like The Web Gallery of Art at
wga.hu, sites with a large collection of searchable images and information
about those images. Can anyone suggest some new sites to visit? I'm
increasingly frustrated with museum sites that list little more than the
accession number along with a thumbnail. I really want to be able to see
the art in detail and read about the artist or the subject.

Hi Dawn,
Have you tried Wikimedia Commons?
For example, I've found a number of Renaissance era paintings in large detail
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Renaissance_paintings
It is kinda hit or miss with background info, it's hard to search for
anyone specific, and some images are not yet available, but I have
otherwise managed to find images here that I've not seen elsewhere on the net.
I also recently discovered a couple of prayer books at the Morgan Library,
and I know there are more images on that site I haven't gotten to yet.

The ones I was just looking at are:
"Two Masterpieces Illuminated by Jean Poyet contains commentary on
eighty-three images from the Prayer Book of Anne de Bretagne and the Hours
of Henry VIII"
http://www.morganlibrary.org/exhibitions/online/html/index_1024.html
Click on the image to the left. The Hours of Henry VIII is similar to the
Calendar of Simon Bening, with images of people at work.
