Partly because of the strong cultural tendency for marriage-within-the-faith, I'm 100% Russian Jewish (so figure some distant Middle Eastern roots way back somewhere). But I'm only second-generation American. My kids, another generation into the American mixing bowl, are half Ashkenazic, with the other half being mostly English with some French Canadian and who-knows-what mixed in. Two completely incompatible looks -- when you see my parents and my in-laws together, you can immediately see they're from different genetic pools. But I can see elements of both in my kids' facial features.
