Hi Monica, this has been discussed numerous time on this list. I think you will be successful in searching the archives for it. I suggest you try the archives listed on this page: http://mail.indra.com/mailman/listinfo/h-costume but also check out this mail archive: http://dir.gmane.org/gmane.culture.studies.history.costume
You can search more easily there in my opinion.

As to the topic, IMHO, you may both be right. I think you'll find the jist of the conversations to say that it is fair to say that the ruff developed from the chemise irrespective of how the neck line was handled. OTH, I if I remember how the discussions have gone, you simply won't find any substantial evidence that drawn necklines existed or were prevalent enough to say that was the source. Clearly, they are used extensively in Ren. Fair. situations. :-)

The Power of AND
…Or how I learned to stay focused on
work and still go fly fishing.
By Eric Balinski
“… a key aspect of highly visionary companies: They
do not oppress themselves with what we call the
Tyranny of the OR – the rational view that cannot
easily accept paradox, which cannot live with two
seemingly contradictory forces or ideas at the same
time. The Tyranny of OR pushes people to believe
that things must be either A or B but not both.”
