I should have added: several have a tie at the back neck that is actually a drawstring that goes through the entire neckline. I used this method in my first ballgown (from Bradfield, 1823). It worked a treat! Just pulling it lightly closed cinched up the entire neckline so that the bodice fitted smoothly--no gaps around the bust, neck, or shoulders.
