An effective way to eliminate odors in books (tobacco smoke or musty) is to place the book in a sealed plastic bag with (unused) cat litter. Check it periodically and when you no longer detect the offensive odor, remove and let air. The cat litter will absorb the odors and any moisture.

Another may be to place the offensive item in a bag or other container with activated charcoal (like the kind you BBQ with) and leave for a day or two. It works great for really foul odors, like that of a refrigerator left unplugged with food inside for weeks before it was found. Yeah, that's the only thing that worked when I was an apartment manager. I haven't checked my kitty litter to see if it contains charcoal, but it probably has something similar working for it.
