1. cornmeal - sift it into the fur, let sit, shake it out (outdoors, as it makes a mess....) 2. try a dry pet shampoo - same idea - shake it on, let sit, shake or brush it out.

What someone else said - cut with a scalpel or very sharp knife, from the back. Having just recently made things from an old fur coat, some suggestions:

1. Completely disassemble the coat - remove linings, interlinings, fastenings, etc, so you can get a good look at the backside of the fur. 2. Note that the furs are not whole skins - they are stripped and pieced - this is done to maximize the area one can get out of a single skin. 3. Construction seams and piecing seams are similar, but construction seams are a bit larger/thicker. Disassemble the construction until you have flat pieces. If you get the right end of the thread, the stitching just pulls out - they're usually sewn with a type of chain stitch. 4. Evaluate the skin (not the fur) condition carefully. Check for holes, weak spots, or brittleness - Due to the size of the pieces I needed, one of the items ended up with several holes that needed to be creatively patched. While patching, some of the skin I was trying to stitch to just crumbled. :( 5. Make sure you get the lay of the fur the way you want it when you cut out your trims.

Good Luck!

Subject: [h-cost] Cleaning fur

So to my question... How do you clean white fur? I have purchased and old white mink fur coat and I'd like to clean it before I cut it up :) I'd really rather not spend much more money on this project. Any ideas?

Also how do I cut it? I am going to use it to trim a 15th century V necked gown.
