Absolutely. But some stuff gets canonized that probably never was very good, either because it's early, or because it's "art." And other stuff that's perfectly good, at least as entertainment, gets "lost," at least for a long time, because it goes out of style, or becauze it's by a minority author, or because it's an early work that was destroyed.
Bach was lost for nearly a century before the Romantics (that's the musical term) picked him up and made him popular again.
I find it interesting what falls by the wayside. I wish it were easier, here in the states, to find some of Jane Austin's contemporaries' books. I wish we knew weather the Elizabethan embroidery on certain night caps was the work of a professional or an amateur. I wish that the church had been willing to save secular music instead of just religious stuff from the 12th and 13th centuries-- then we'd have more of it.
I wonder who was "popular" and who was considered "bad" and always try to remember that the info we have is so spotty and scarce that a true picture can never be drawn.
Sad, really Genie _______________________________________________ h-costume mailing list [email protected] http://mail.indra.com/mailman/listinfo/h-costume
