There is a nice close up of her head in bildindex. I can't find it which is
extremely annoying. I'm sure someone posted it from here.... Or was it that
I had a close up of her head froma book....

It's the Anguissola portrait of her I was recreating:

Actually there is a lot of misunderstanding about these headdresses. There
are indeed "pillbox" hats (you see them in some side on portraits, others
have done more research though) but there are also a great many headdresses
that are essentially jewellery that is matched to the carcanet and any other
jewellery around the neck/chest region.

If you look at the close ups of her head in the orange gown you can see
hair. You can also see this in the image from Sotheby's at the top of the
page from her time in France.

I just found a nice light image of the Coello painting of Isabel's daughter:

You can see her hair behind the pearls which shows more hair dressing.

Clouet's portraits are great for seeing more of the jewelled headdresses:

This is really similar to Elizabeth de Valois arrangement in the Orange
gown, with a flat almost lattice on the head and the hair arranged behind.

This is a really bad example, someone has coloured over the original sketch
which is quite different. You can see in the painting of her she is wearing
a white gown with silver couching and no hat in her hair:

This looks to be the same lattice type of arrangement.
