Just checked my dictionary for 'cordwainer'and got a second note that cordwainers also are/ can be specialists for certain parts of shoemaking.(Perhaps the party-leaving gent had some tweaking to do in the shop?) I am not sure, but I think that cobblers were more responsible for shoe repair and not necessarily shoe making.
