I've *never* been to New York. If there was only *one* thing that you
would do while in NY -- fiber/garb/SCA general related (and the
symposium that I need to attend is Saturday Morning), what would you
do?

Go fabric shopping in the garment district. I was there in 2002 and

I can't remember the streets exactly, but within a couple block radius
there were so many little hole in the wall shops with great stuff.

Definitely go to the Met and/or the Cloisters. If you have time, go
to the garment district --- it covers any of the 30's-numbered streets,
on Broadway, and off Broadway on either side (going east or going
west), business hours only, weekdays only. You never know what you'll
find, but it's usually real bargain shopping! I'm in Oz now, but
lived in NYC for about 20 years. The diamond district is 47th Street
-- it's wall-to-wall fine-jewelry shops, not just diamonds -- and when
I lived there, the area between the garment district and the diamond
district was littered with all sorts of weird little places on the side
streets, including camera shops, little artsy places, rooming houses
(very slummy), art-supply stores, parking garages and lots, costume
jewelry wholesalers and retailers (bulk kind, good bargain-hunting),
more fabric shops, tiny bookshops, like that. And crossover shops
from the two "districts." If you go shopping there, make sure you
take a Manhattan street map with you! And wear COMFORTABLE shoes, or
your feet may hate you for days! Actually, wherever you decide to
go, wear comfortable shoes -- you're definitely looking at miles and
miles of walking, even just inside one museum. You may also find it
handy to put a couple of sturdy cloth shopping bags in your backpack
(or whatever), preferably with handles long enough to sling the bags up
on your shoulder even if they're pretty full.
BTW, you do know that SUNY Stony Brook is two to three hours' drive
east of Manhattan, right? Probably longer by LIRR.
Good luck getting to the meeting, and have fun!
