Thanks for the ideas--I'll probably try all of them at least once! What
I'll probably try first is basting folded strips of muslin on each side of
the ribbon so that the muslin can be held in a frame (the kind that only
holds your project on two sides), but the ends of the ribbon can be left
free & flapping and I can stitch through the ribbon without worrying about
catching anything. If that's too puckery, I'll try laying the ribbon on top
of the muslin, sewing through both, and then just trimming the muslin enough
so that it doesn't show around the edges when I sew the ribbon onto the gown
or headwear.
Actually now that I think about it, I'll probably try the second one first,
since it sounds so much easier!
For transfering the design, I'm going to try some self-adhesive water
soluble stabilizer--there's a couple of varieties that are thick enough that
I could just draw the design on the stabilizer, then rinse it away when I'm
done.
