Mendez is now a famous artist in Frederick, MD. His life has been very
interesting. (sorry, I'm a little slow getting this reply out)
Here's a Mendez story related to me by one of his students: Student when to the lecture which was given by a little grey haired old man who spoke slowly and with some trouble, limped, trembled, etc. As the old man discussed body mechanics, social expectations of certain "character types" the old man would demonstrate ways that the costume itself aided in reminding the "actor" about his role. (Remember the audience not professional actors, but overseas operatives.) The old man removed an orthotic from his shoe that forced the limp. As the talk progressed the old man removed the wadding from his mouth "fixing" the speech difficulty. In addition, by changing some things we costumers know very well like wigs & clothing, and by changing some things actors & do thru training. By the end of the talk the old man had turned into a much younger version of the guy on the back of Master of Disguise. The student was impressed. http://www.themasterofdisguise.com/ According to the site Both Antonia & Jonna are speaking at the Spy Museum soon. My favorite spy fact & Cold War books just off the top of my head: The Ultimate Spy (has pics of stuff now in the Spy Museum), Man Without a Face (by Marcus Wolf the head of East Germany's Stasi, & invedntor of the Romeo Trap), Oleg Gordievski's book, (a KGB defector), In from the Cold by Robert Gates, (former head of CIA), Hostile Waters (written by the Soviet crew members, this is the real story of the events that inspired "Hunt for Red October"), whatever the heck the book is about Kalugin, his defector-in-place & extraction story is the inspiration for Clancy's "Red Rabbit". Favorite new spy fi author: Alan Furst Favorite spy album: Music to Spy By, purchased at the Spy Museum the 1st month it opened. Oh the shelf but unread: Gentleman Spy, Allan Dulles biography (for whom Dulles airport in DC is named) Strange spy fact: Julia Child, more famous as a TV chef, was an OSS decoder. --cin Cynthia Barnes [EMAIL PROTECTED] _______________________________________________ h-costume mailing list [email protected] http://mail.indra.com/mailman/listinfo/h-costume
