Thank you everyone for the suggestions, Diane, the idea of a beaded section
down each front side, sounds absolutely lovely, but (you knew there was a
'but' coming, didn't you?) the four doublets (black-with pearls, white-with
all over embroidery, goldish wool, and green/black herringbone, are all
heavily padstitched, and well, cutting and sewing through that, has already
proven too much for my poor little sewing machine. But that is something to
bear in mind for next time. And next time, I'll bribe someone to help me
with the fittings.
I think the idea of putting a strip down the button side will do the job,
and I have the scraps from construction so matching won't be a problem
(always hang on to the cabbage for repairs, I at least got that right)
So again, thanks to everyone, I love this list.
