I believe that is because the director is from India, and she wanted that  
aesthetic.
 
I never did see the movie--I wanted to read the book first, and by the time  
I finished it, it was gone from theaters.  Haven't cared enough to get it  on 
DVD.  I find all the characters pretty hard to take.
