Also never read the books, but have seen pretty much every ep. of the series 
(was de rigeur at college in the early - mid 90s, for the seen bean factor) - 
and would agree about the women.  They're mostly there to be slept with or 
rescued, and although a bit pants in terms of accuracy, the clothes do reflect 
that quite well (eg demure and white for the rescu-ees, and flamenco-esque for 
sharpe's mrs)!

The military uniforms are quite accurate for the principles (of course 
they're awful for the extras, if you can be bothered to look that closely).

That said - if you get the chance, check out the back of Sharpes officers 
dolman in the Indian ep that was shown over here a while ago.  It's accurate 
from 
the front, but clearly the person who made it had no clue what the back was 
like :o)
