If the two straps were parallel, you were probably looking at
Birkenstocks, the Arizona model, possibly the single most popular
sandal with Americans of both sexes between the ages of 25 and 70, and
generally associated in the media with "liberals" and "tree-huggers."
"River sandals" might be Teva sandals, which have a straight strap
across the toes, a diagonal strap to the ankle, and, I believe, an
ankle strap (my brother-in-law and sister wear those, but I haven't
really looked closely at them, being a Birkenstock person myself). Some
(not all) Tevas are made of waterproof materials. (The popular image of
the Teva wearer is, I believe, "young outdoorsman" and Sierra Club.)
