Greetings all,

Today I volunteered to participate in a program involving BenFranklin. I
also volunteered to sew his costume and mine. I have until March to get this
done so I am not in a huge rush. However, the lady who asked me to do it
KNOWS I do medieval garb and am slowly "loosing" my not-period-correct garb
and replacing it with better quality stuff. She is really wanting to do
period correct for this show. I can't sew without a pattern. Can anyone
recommend a really good pattern for a man's outfit and for a maid (my part)
? A quick look on the internet turned up The Towsend catalog website, does
anyone know if their patterns are period correct?

My thanks in advance,
Lisa in MT

The simple answer is yes and no....Be careful of what you get from Townsend.

Their off the rack is if-y, some it authentic, some is not.
Their patterns are the same way (some are authentic, some are not...but it
seems to my recollection that more are authentic, than not. JP Ryan is a good
line, as is Kanicks Korner Try to stay away from Eagles view, and Pegee's of
Williamsburg, the scholarship on these has been passed by the first two lines.
Also. go to the library and get, (inter library loan if they don't have them)
Fitting and Proper, The williamsburg costume close up book and just for fun
What clothes reveal from Williams burg. These have digrams of garments and
fairly involed instruction on 18th cent construction

The good news, there are many pictures and portraits from life of Ben
franklin.
The bad news, Where and when is the maid from In France? in Philly, London,
That will help point you in some direction (Oh, like the french maid in the
Kyoto book, little jacket, big cap.

Welcome to the dark side, the 18th cent....
