Indeed, there is a traditional silk fabric called "chameleon" that is three colors woven together. I haven't found much of it in modern stuffs -- like almost everything else, it shows up as a designer decorator fabric once in a while -- but i have entertained thoughts of starting to weave it. But this site has a daunting description of the requirements -- along with a beautiful photograph:

Apparently the modern, machine-woven stuff, has two colors in the warp and a single color weft -- easiest for machine weaving -- but the "real" stuff had a monochrome warp and two weft threads, which were thrown from a double shuttle but rigorously kept side-by-side and not allowed to cross. I wish there were a magnified version of the photo so I could squint better at the weave.

The main site, http://www.cvmt.com/index.htm, is in French, but many of the articles are translated into English. If my French serves me correctly, the site may be closing soon -- if you are interested in silk weaving, and especially if you can get around in French, it may be worthwhile to purchase the CD of the site -- http://www.cvmt.com/ liste_cd2.htm. They seem to be asking 15 Euros plus shipping for it. I have written to ask if the English translations are part of the CD. If you can read French, the 30 other CDs available from CVMT may also be of interest:

Anyway, the chameleon silk is gorgeous.
