Oh, that's too lovely! I'm sure my dog would love a silk ribbon!
Thank you!

Subject: [h-cost] OT: 18th C dog leash

So, I am taking my dog to an 18th-century re-enactment. Usually I put a black leather collar and leash on her for those events, but this time we might need to be more historically accurate than that -- the spring-snap hook on the leash is definitely a modern convenience, and I don't know anything about 18th century harness hardware. I have just started squinting at 18th C pictures with dogs in them, but the connection between collar and leash is pretty much obscured. It does look like leash and collar are usually the same material, whether leather or rope. I'm wondering if maybe they used something like the modern show lead -- a leash with a ring at one end, you slip the other end through the ring and voila, instant slip collar. Since Alexander Pope was writing verses to attach to dog collars, I must assume there *were* separate collars -- but can anyone tell me how the leashes might have been attached? Yes, I see that they could just have been tied on, but if you own dogs you will understand why I think this was probably not the method of choice. Does anybody actually *know* how leashes were hooked to collars before the spring- loaded snap hook? If I can't figure this out in time I can always just tie a rope to the leather collar. My dog has a lot of fur; I can hope that it will obscure the worst anachronisms.
Thanks!
Lauren
