So far I've published five books of Victorian and Edwardian historic
patterns, which include dressmaking manuals or excerpts from them,
and/or excerpts from period magazines that contain sewing information.
Also one general book on historic sewing and on altering vintage clothes
(some of the latter info is also applicable to theatrical costumes).
Details are on my website, http://www.lavoltapress.com.
Another thing that might be helpful is advanced modern clothing design
classes. When I formally studied clothing design, my couture sewing
classes contained a great deal of info useful for the
Victorian/Edwardian period, which I still use in making my own historic
reproductions as well as of course my writing work. However, as your
sister-in-law seems to have already guessed, the sewing methods for
different eras do vary, due to not only garment structure and technology
(especially availability of the sewing machine), but custom.

Hello the list:
My sister-in-law has been doing costuming work in a community theater
and is generally an intelligent, competent, detail-oriented seamstress.
The theater does both contemporary plays and classics--
Victorian/Edwardian and '30s/'40s mostly, but once in a while '20s. For
the period shows she likes to use period patterns when she can, and
that's where she's running into frustration. I offered to seek help for
her on this wonderfully helpful list.
Does anyone know a source--book, on-line instruction, or workshop
(Connecticut area)--for guidance on tailoring and sewing techniques for
these periods?
